News Around Next-generation of Energy Performance Assessment and Certification
October 2023

New Deliverable: Performance gap causation - D3.2

This report takes the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) methodologies of nine different European countries, across 65 tested buildings, to investigate how the modelled energy consumption compares with real, measured energy consumption of those same buildings.

Each individual building is modelled with the local EPC methodology and compared with metered energy consumption, converting the EPC output to a parameter that allows for this comparison where required. The study demonstrates the challenges in comparing different methodologies, with different metrics and frameworks, particularly across relatively small samples of buildings.

The Survey on Design and Experience of EPCs

Are you ready to make an impact and influence the future of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)? We need YOUR valuable insights to create a better EPC experience!

We are currently investigating the design of next-generation EPCs across Europe and we want to hear from different users about their experiences with EPCs and thoughts about where these might go in the future. We are interested in hearing from a wide range of users – so if you have any reason to use the outputs of EPCs then your feedback on this will be important to us. The survey takes only 10 minutes of your time.

crossCert Focus Group Event

At this year's Climate Alliance International Conference, the crossCert focus group will be held in Modena, Italy. There, invited guests as well as interested parties from across Europe can gather to assess the status of energy performance certificates (EPCs). We will discuss how they can be improved from their perspective and seek feedback on how they can be made more people-centric and how their usability can be improved for all citizens. This will be done under the umbrella of further harmonizing EPCs across Europe and improving the next generation of them.

Upcoming Webinar: Funding Energy Efficient Buildings

The planned recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive foresees an important role for Energy Performance Certificates as tools not only to express the measured energy efficiency grade of a building but also as the marketing tool for citizens to use to demonstrate the value of their dwelling. Incentives to renovate the worst performing buildings are key for a decarbonised building stock in all EU countries. Easy to access and easy to understand subsidy and funding programmes are necessary to reach high renovation rates and increased use of energy performance certificates.

  • What does the national landscape of renovation funding schemes look like in various member states?
  • What are the conditions to receive financial support to upgrade a building to higher EPC?
  • What is the role of energy advisors in the process to receive the said financial support?

These are some of the questions we elaborate on during this highly interactive webinar. Bring your expertise and solutions and join the webinar which will be announced soon on the website!

Next-generation Dynamic Digital EPCs for Enhanced Quality and User Awareness

In July, D^2EPC partners met at the consortium meeting in Delft for the last time before the completion of the project in August this year. In this H2020 project, a digital dynamic tool was developed to calculate asset rating and operational rating of a building, introducing novel indicators, which affect the energy performance of a building.

The study demonstrated the current EPC schemes' quality and weaknesses and presented the dynamic EPC's novelty aspects. The novel aspects include the following indicators:

- Smart-readiness level of the buildings

- Human comfort and well-being indicators

- Sustainability-related indicators (life cycle assessment )

TIMEPAC International Workshop

TIMEPAC 2023 International Workshop due to take place on November 21 (live in Vienna and virtual).   The TIMEPAC-Consortium organises this year’s workshops edition entitled: Towards a Dynamic and Enhanced EPC: Advanced Procedures for Building Assessment and Certification.

The following sessions, which take place one after another, are planned:

  • Session 1: Using BIM for the EPC generation process

  • Session 2: Integrating data sources in renovation roadmaps

  • Session 3: Enhanced EPC - integrating additional indicators, SRI, and BRP

  • Session 4: Supporting the Renovation Wave

Participating with a presentation requires an abstract. This abstract must indicate the session number and title, and answer the questions listed for each session.
